Can Dogs Detect Covid-19?

The sense of smell of dogs is very useful, they can have 100,000 times the smelling ability of humans and they can sniff out explosives or drugs. Therefore, these pooches are the closest friends of police officers. Scientists at France’s National Veterinary School have revealed that dogs are experts at sniffing out COVID-19, with an accuracy close to PCR tests.

In Dubai, specially trained police dogs were used to assist police to detect passengers who have SARS-CoV-2 arriving at Dubai International Airport. Similar research is underway at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Can Dogs Detect Covid-19?

In the near future, it is likely that our four-legged friends will sniff out COVID-19 at airports to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus among travelers. With the special study, sweet samples from the armpits of 335 people were tested by PCR and there are 109 people who were positive. Nine dogs were trained to sniff out signs of SARS-CoV-2 infection can indicate positive samples with an impressive sensitivity of 97%.

Of course, using trained dogs is the basis for supporting rapid tests to detect infected people at the earliest. However, we still need a PCR test to determine whether a person is infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19).

On another research conducted by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany, published in July 2020. Eight dogs were trained for a week to detect SARS-CoV-2 in saliva or tracheal secretions from people with COVID-19. The research found that the dogs determined the difference between positive and negative samples. On average, dogs can identify correctly 82.63% of positive samples as positive and 96.35% of negative samples as negative.

There is still a lot of research needed to conduct before applying widely in airports, but this may offer a new hope to detect infected people in time, prevent the pandemic as soon as possible.

How Long Do Dogs Sleep?

Similar to humans, dachshunds or other dog breeds need sleep to rest, recharge, or have time to repair muscle, organs, and cells. If we usually stay awake during the day, sleep at night, ideally a long sleep from 6 to 8 hours per night. Do you ever wonder how many hours your dogs sleep a day?

According to studies, puppies’ sleep includes napes both day and night. In 24 hours, they spend 50% of the time sleeping, 30% resting, they only really act normally 20% of the time each day.

How many hours a day do dogs sleep?

Photo by Nguyễn Thị Bé Trúc

Sleep duration will vary across ages, breeds, activity levels, health, and even sleeping locations.

These pooches can sleep 18-20 hours a day. They have developed brains, everything is new to them. They always explore new things, and that makes them easy to get tired and need a lot of rest.

Older dogs also tend to sleep more. Generally, a normal dog usually sleeps between 12-14 hours a day.

Why do dogs sleep so much?

Our four legs sleep a lot more than people do, and they will sleep when they feel it’s time to sleep, unlike people who are always busy and don’t pay attention to the signals from their bodies.

Besides, most puppies will easily fall asleep whenever they can’t find anything better to do. No work, no smartphone, no deadline… then sleeping is the best way for them to spend a long boring day or be alone all day. In addition, they do not have the ability to control their bodies, so whenever they feel out of energy, tired, they will lie down and sleep.

Another reason that makes our furry friends sleep a lot. When they eat food and act enough, then they can sleep a lot and you don’t need to worry about that. Because this is just a physiological phenomenon of an animal.

Where should puppies sleep?

Photo by Tyler J. Van Riper

Dogs can nap anywhere as well as they feel comfortable, warm or simply they like to lie in awkward positions. However, you have better provide a good dog bed to your pooch that can give your dog a comfortable space for sleeping.

A dog bed does not need to be expensive, but you should provide thicker beds for older dogs, comfier beds for teacup dogs.

Regularly observing your puppies’ expressions helps you recognize unusual signs in their behavior so that you can take care of your pet properly and help them grow up healthy.

Top 10 Smartest Dog Breeds – Are Dachshunds Smart?

What dog breeds are smartest? You know? Dogs are not only emotional animals, but they are also extremely smart!

Which dog breeds are the world’s smartest dogs you have ever known? Do you know that dogs are not only emotional animals, but they are also extremely intelligent? There are many dogs from small to big, from white to black, they are some of the smartest animals in the world.

Generally, dogs are smart. However, there are some stand-out dogs that are very intelligent and some of them can help humans so much. They are able to understand and obey commands.

Stanley Coren Psychologist, after surveying nearly 200 dog breeds around the world, wrote these intelligent dogs in a book entitled “The Intelligence of Dogs”. The book was published in 1994 and reissue in 2006. That is one of the best book works on the subject of the world’s smartest dogs.

Have you been curious about the dog’s intelligence? For example, if large dog breeds have a higher IQ than small breeds? Or how can we determine the dog’s intelligence? These questions are basic elements to help people determine the world’s smartest dogs ranking.

However, intelligence is not all. But we will research to have a ranking on top of smartest dogs. The smartest dog ranking is based on the ability to receive and process information of each dog.

What makes the world’s smartest dogs?

Coren Psychologist has evaluated the intelligence level of dog breeds based on natural instincts, adaptability to all their circumstances, and ability to understand their owners.

However, Mrs. Sarah Hodgson an expert on the behavior of the pet said that the smartest dogs ranking is not all. Some dogs have low ranks but they look so cute and they know how to make their owners happy and satisfied.

For example, hounds are difficult dogs to absorb issues around them, but they have a special sense of sight and smell. Or, like Terrier dogs, they don’t have a good orientation ability, but they have excellent hearing.

Do dogs have IQs?

In fact, this is an issue that still causes a lot of concerns for many people, especially experts in the field of dog research. As Mrs. Hodgson explained above, IQ is not all and it really depends on many factors such as reaction, good observation, and acumen.

Coren presented a book saying that you can test your dog’s IQ based on real analysis. For example, if your dog learns a new command after training less than 5 times, you can see your dog has the same intelligence as the genius Einsteins.

Big dogs are wiser than small dogs?

This issue has not been verified until now. But there is research showing that bigger dogs may be more intelligent than smaller dogs.

If you look at the list of nearly 200 smartest dog breeds in the world listed by Coren, then you can easily recognize that Papillon is the smallest dog.

Psychologist Coren used to write a headline on Today’s Psychology newspaper “Are big dogs smarter than small dogs?”. Drawing from a study from earlier of the year. Mr. Coren shared that: “Study data was taken from 1888 dogs and they gave an unclear result. However, there was an important thing that big dogs tend to be able to remember longer than small dogs.”

Even so, small dogs have outstanding abilities such as keeping calm, not facing enemies…

Mrs. Hodgson added that many mixed dog breeds also have obedience, intelligence like big dogs.
